Swedish vs deep tissue vs deep relaxation — which one should you book?

Three of the most common questions we hear: what's the difference between Swedish and deep tissue? And what exactly is deep relaxation? Here's a simple breakdown — so you can pick the one that actually fits how your body feels today.

Swedish massage — the classic full-body treatment

Swedish massage is often the starting point. It's a flowing full-body technique with adjustable pressure — we can stay light and calming or work firmer and more actively depending on what you need. Great for releasing tension, supporting circulation and helping the body unwind overall.

Pick Swedish if you want a balanced treatment that covers the whole body and adapts to the day.

Deep tissue — firm pressure on specific tension

Deep tissue uses slower, more sustained pressure aimed at specific muscles — often neck, shoulders, upper back, lower back or hips. It's not 'Swedish but harder' — it's a different technique that works more deliberately and with clearer direction.

Pick deep tissue if you have stubborn local tension that won't release with lighter work — or if you train a lot and need targeted attention.

Deep relaxation — for stress and the nervous system

Deep relaxation is something else entirely. The pressure is calm and steady, but the goal isn't muscle work — the goal is to settle the nervous system. Slow strokes, long uninterrupted time, warm room, quiet music. You often drift into something close to deep rest or meditation.

Pick deep relaxation if you live with long-term stress, have trouble sleeping, feel mentally overloaded, or just need a couple of hours of real quiet in the body.

    Quick checklist

    • Want balanced full body → Swedish massage
    • Stubborn local muscle tension → deep tissue (we can include it inside Swedish)
    • Stress, sleep, mental fatigue → deep relaxation
    • Training hard and need recovery → Swedish + Normatec, or Synergy Recovery Massage
    • Just neck and shoulders → Back, neck & shoulders 45 min

    Can I combine them?

Yes. At Synergy Massage, Swedish 90 min is our most popular treatment for exactly this reason — we can blend flowing work across the body with deeper, more targeted work where you need it. We check in before the session and adjust as we go.
